Russell’s Visit to Dolphin Suites

Russell Lash is a Forum Travel Expert for accessible holidays. When we heard he was visiting Dolphin Suites, we were thrilled to create an unforgettable experience for him.

When Russell first heard about Dolphin Suites, a fully accessible hotel in Curaçao, he was intrigued but a little apprehensive. Having never encountered a hotel specifically designed to cater to travelers with disabilities and their families, he wasn’t sure what to expect. Arriving late on a Sunday evening after a long flight, Russell was exhausted. But as soon as he entered the hotel, he was struck by the sense of belonging. "It felt like coming home," he said.

An Accessible Haven

As a wheelchair user, Russell was impressed by how seamlessly the hotel accommodated his needs. Unlike many so-called accessible accommodations he had experienced in the U.S., Dolphin Suites was thoughtfully designed for full accessibility. From the spacious suite with a roll-in shower to a kitchen pre-stocked with his favorite groceries, every detail was perfect.

Russell couldn’t stop referring to the suite as his “private apartment.” It featured a large living room, a full kitchen, and a balcony with breathtaking ocean views. "By the end of the week, I didn’t want to leave," he admitted.

The accessible design extended beyond the suite. The hotel pool offered a lift chair, and a quieter pool behind the hotel—nicknamed the “grown-up pool” by Russell—provided a serene retreat. With a BBQ area nearby, it was an ideal spot for a relaxing afternoon.

Conquering Fears at CDTC

The highlight of Russell’s trip was his visit to the Curaçao Dolphin Therapy Center (CDTC). A life-changing dolphin swim session helped him overcome his lifelong fear of the ocean. Working with Bonnie, a dolphin, during the session transformed his relationship with water. He described it as "magic"—a moment when decades of fear melted away, leaving him feeling free and confident.

Not only did the experience ease his anxiety, but Russell also discovered new possibilities. Inspired by his time at the CDTC, he tried adaptive scuba diving, paddleboarding, and even snorkeling. The once-daunting ocean became his playground, and he couldn’t stop exploring.

A Heartfelt Goodbye

When the time came to leave, Russell found it difficult to say goodbye. He praised the Dolphin Suites team for their exceptional service, remarking, "It felt like we’d known the team for years. They truly understood what accessibility means, without me ever needing to ask for help."

Saying goodbye took nearly two hours, filled with gratitude and a few tears. Russell left with memories he’ll treasure forever and a new love for the ocean.

We can’t wait to welcome Russell back to Dolphin Suites—his home away from home.
