Disability Awareness Ambassador Manon van den Heuvel Visits Dolphin Suites

In February 2024, we had the honor of inviting the incredibly inspiring Manon van den Heuvel to our hotel in Curaçao. For those who might not be familiar, Manon is a prominent advocate for disability awareness.

She’s been sharing her personal experiences and insights on her blog and YouTube channel for many years, and her foundation, established in 2023, is about inclusivity and community awareness.

It was Manon's first vacation outside Europe, and we were determined to make it unforgettable.

Upon arrival at Dolphin Suites, Manon was thrilled to find just how fully wheelchair accessible the hotel is, with our low reception desk, spacious elevators, and wide corridors. Manon and her partner stayed in our Deluxe Suite, and both commented on how the bathroom modifications blend seamlessly with the decor - showing that accessibility and aesthetics can go hand in hand.

One of the highlights of Manon’s stay was our in-house restaurant, Reefs Cafe & Co. She was delighted to find she didn’t have to venture to the boulevard for breakfast. The yogurt with fruit, in particular, was a hit!

Exploring the Island

When exploring, Manon and her partner took full advantage of Curaçao’s vibrant offerings. A quick 10-minute drive from Dolphin Suites landed them in the trendy Pietermaai district, right next to the Punda quarter. Not far from us, Mambo Boulevard was another favorite, offering dining and entertainment options. Manon’s personal top pick was the Mood restaurant, perfect for a special night out. Manon found Mambo Beach to be incredibly accessible, with excellent facilities for wheelchair users. A visit to Willemstad was, of course, a must. Manon was captivated by the charm of Punda and Otrobanda — and the famous Queen Emma bridge connecting them! Otrobanda’s Mangrove Park was a standout in particular, with its tranquil setting and fascinating wildlife set in the city's heart. Manon’s time in Curaçao wouldn’t have been complete without a visit to the CDTC. She participated in an introductory swim and was amazed to see how much the dolphins love and understand people. She described the experience as a “once-in-a-lifetime”, leaving her inspired and uplifted.

Manon’s Tips for Accessible Travel

Here are some handy tips Manon shared for future visitors:

  • For Care Services: Carin Cares offers a fantastic team of qualified nurses for holiday support.
  • For Rental Aids: Contact Pro Kuido or Carin Cares for renting mobility aids.
  • For Modified Vehicles: Emma Rentals has a Volkswagen Caddy with a ramp for wheelchair users. It’s a popular option, so booking in advance is a must.

The Dolphin Suites team is always here to help arrange these services and provide more information about the island’s accessibility.

Manon’s stay was nothing short of wonderful, and we’re already looking forward to her next visit. Thank you for sharing your journey with us, Manon, and for inspiring us all to make the world a more inclusive place!
